Veterans Benefits Concussion Help App Developed to Help Service Members
Earlier this year, the Veterans Administration expanded its list of traumatic brain injury and Veterans benefits concussion-related illnesses to make veterans disability benefits more accessible for service men and women who suffered a concussion during their tour of duty.
Recently, the McGuire Veterans Affairs Medical Center announced that they led a team which developed a mobile app called Concussion Coach that will help users diagnose a concussion or traumatic brain injury, and is especially designed for the military.
The Veterans benefits concussion app is currently out for iPods and iPads, and an Android mobile version will be available later in the year.
Micaela Cornis-Pop led the development team. She said the team developed the VA concussion app to help with self-management of concussion symptoms, as defined by the National Center for PTSD at the VA. Self-management of concussion and traumatic brain injury symptoms would help veterans take more responsibility for their care and reporting their symptoms to their doctors. When patients keep track of and manage their symptoms better, they become partners with their doctors in their treatment.
The app is specifically designed to provide education about Veteran’s Benefits concussion help and their symptoms, help manage specific symptoms as they happen (for example, trouble falling asleep), “build resistance” or create an environment that helps manage concussion symptoms, and offer a list of resources and support for veterans suffering from traumatic brain injuries and concussions.
Although the app was developed by the VA for veterans, Cornis-Pop says that it can be used by anyone in the general public. “It can be used by anybody with the understanding that this does not diagnose or manage traumatic brain injury. It is a helpful tool to have in discussing with a specialized provider,” she said.
TBI and Veterans Disability Benefits
Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) are not like other injuries. Unfortunately, because many of the symptoms of “mild” to “moderate” traumatic brain injury go unnoticed, many severe injuries are not detected until much later. The injury commonly avoids detection on hospital imaging equipment, including the emergency room.
Traumatic brain injury can occur when the head suddenly and violently hits an object, or when an object pierces the skull and enters brain tissue.
A TBI may be the result of a

an accident due to a dangerous condition on the property of another.
The long-lasting symptoms of a TBI could lead to a Social Security Disability or Veterans Disability benefits filing. If the TBI was caused by active military service, then Veterans Disability benefits could apply. To be entitled to service-connected benefits, a veteran must prove that his disability was the result of military service or medical treatment by the VA hospital and was not the result of his own willful misconduct.
In many ways, disabled veteran’s benefits involve issues and challenges that are very similar to those we experience in helping non-veterans apply for and obtain Social Security disability benefits.
