Mental illness is a widespread problem in South Carolina and across the United States. According to a National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) study conducted in 2008, 26.2% of adults in the US suffer from some form of mental illness.
Emotional support is critical, but until now, many who have felt stigmatized by the illness have not had anywhere to turn. Fortunately, the National Alliance of Mental Illness has opened a new loation in the Midlands. NAMI, who works to educate, support and advocate for individuals and the families of individuals suffering from mental illness, provides its services free of charge.
NAMI Mid-Carolina President Jack Balling told WLTX, “It’s great to have something like NAMI to turn to because people have similar situations and have that support.”
NAMI’s new office is located at 1823 Gadsden Street.
