Email Accidentally Compromises Social Security Information of Over 4,000 Georgia Residents
The Georgia Department of Labor is warning thousands of people, who filed for unemployment with the agency, that their social security information has been compromised. An “employee error,” according to the department, resulted in 1,000 people receiving an email with a spreadsheet attached, that contained the social security numbers, names, email addresses, and telephone numbers of 4,457 people.
The DOL has requested that anyone who received the email immediately delete it. In addition, they are offering free credit monitoring to everyone whose name appeared on the list. They believe that primarily residents of Cobb County have been affected.
Ralph Corrubia, of Acworth, received the email Thursday afternoon. “At first I thought it was spam or junk and then when I saw ‘Department of Labor’, I saw there was a spread sheet and then I opened it and there was those social security numbers,” he said.
Corrubia said he found his information on the spread sheet. “I will call a credit monitoring company and get that done and then just wait to see what the government (GADOL) is going to do,” he said.
The Georgia Department of Labor issued the following statement about the social security breach:
“A document containing confidential information, including names and social security numbers, for 4,457 customers of the Georgia Department of Labor’s Cobb-Cherokee Career Center has inadvertently been emailed to approximately 1,000 people, primarily in Cobb and Cherokee counties. The email occurred because of an employee error.”
